We had a lovely trip - 2 weeks touring the South Island, 1 week with Dad and Jan on the North Island.
We stayed mostly at youth hostels/backpackers - some were nice and good fun, others were pretty awful.
NZ is gorgeous, we nearly "burned out" on staring at amazing scenery around every corner.
